2012 MDTA Scholarship Awarded

The Missouri Dump Truckers Association has awarded four $1,000 scholarships for the 2011-2012 collegiate school year.  The four recipients are Kadie Hays, daughter of Terry Hays of Hannibal, Missouri; Jacob Murphy, son of James and Janet Murphy of Hermann, Missouri; Alex O’Laughlin, son of Russell and Cindy O’Laughlin of Shelbina, Missouri and Ray Vannoy, son of Jim and Mitzi Vannoy of Point Lookout, Missouri.

Kadie Hays currently attends the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri majoring in Nursing. Kadie graduated from Hannibal Senior High in Hannibal in May 2010.

Jacob Murphy currently attends the Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri majoring in Business Administration. Jacob transferred from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri.  Jacob graduated from Hermann High School in Hermann in May 2008.

Alex O’Laughlin is a 2011 graduate of South Shelby High School.  In the fall, Alex plans to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri majoring in Engineering with aspirations for a Master’s Degree in the field.

Ray Vannoy currently attends the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri majoring in Chemistry/Math. Ray plans to attend pharmacy school.  Ray graduated from North Shelby High School in Shelbyville in May 2009.

Kadie Hays
Kadie HaysAt the University of Missouri-Columbia, Kadie has a cumulative college grade point average (GPA) of 3.85.

While in college Kadie’s extracurricular activities included:

  • MU Wellness Peer Educator (2010-2011);
  • Member of Student Nurses’ Association (2010-2011); and
  • Member of Nursing Student Council (2010-2011).

Honors and awards received:

  • 2010 MU Dean’s List; and
  • Graduated from High School Magna Cum Laude.

Community and other activities:

  • Volunteer at University Hospital; and
  • Peer Note Taker for History 1100.

Kadie is currently not employed. When Kadie is at home she helps out with babysitting and housework. While at MU, studying and volunteering is her full-time job. Kadie plans to receive a Master of Science in Nursing and be a Nurse Practitioner specializing in labor and delivery.

Jacob Murphy
In Jacob’s previous three years in college between Central Methodist University and Missouri State University, he has maintained above a 3.38 GPA.

  • Town and Country 4-H President-For four years, during that time I led the meetings, helped organize activities and community service projects.  Represented our club at various county 4-H activities.  Some community service projects that I did were:  4-H trash pickup around town and highways (9, 10), Decorate the nursing home resident’s doors at Christmas (9, 10), Bingo at the nursing home (9, 11), Clean up show arena at Gasconade County Fair (9, 10, 11, 12), Help with buyers dinner at Gasconade County Fair (9, 10), and Help with concession stand at wiener dog race (9, 10, 11).
  • Helped Girl Scouts put up flags for various holidays and also for the death of Erik Heldt (soldier killed in Iraq) (9, 10, 11);
  • Helped at the concession stand for the 5th and 6th grade basketball tournament (9, 10, 11, 12);
  • Helped at the HHS concession stand during games (9, 10, 11, 12);
  • Helped organize and work a car wash benefitting Mike Todd, a victim of a car accident and fellow St. Paul’s Sunday School member (11);
  • Helped the Hermann Masons work at a child ID clinic fingerprinting the children attending the clinic (11);
  • Community service worker for Coach Schneider at HHS helping him with what he needed done (12);
  • Worked at BearFest at Missouri State University by helping with activities for incoming college students at the beginning of the school year (College 1);
  • Donated blood at Hermann and Springfield, Missouri (College 1, 2, 3); and
  • Helped with “A Night in Springfield”, an event for homeless awareness.

Jacob worked for the City of Hermann as a soccer referee from 2003 to 2007; as a stocker and bagger for Loutre Market in 2007 and 2008; as a baseball umpire for the City of Hermann in 2008 to 2010; and cutting grass in 2010.

While in school Jacob works 10 hours a week at the Missouri State University as an office assistant in the Accounting Department from 2009 to 2011.  In addition Jacob is a mentor in Trio at the Missouri State University in 2010 & 2011.  In the summer, Jacob will be taking six additional credit hours along with working part-time.  When he is at home, Jacob helps his dad with his truck.

Jacob will be a senior in college majoring in Business Administration.  After graduation he plans to start his career in the business field.

Alex O’Laughlin
Alex O'LaughlinWhile attending South Shelby High School, Alex has a 3.95 GPA on a 4.0 scale, taking a rigorous college preparatory curriculum.

While in high school, Alex’s extracurricular activities included:

  • National Honor Society (2010 & 2011)
  • American Field Services Club President (2010 & 2011);
  • Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) (2008-2011);

Alex is currently employed at Leo O’Laughlin, Inc. where he maintains the yards and performs other odd jobs as well as operates heavy equipment and light service on trucks 15 hours a week.

Alex plans to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia and obtain a Master’s Degree in Engineering to pursue a position at Boeing.

Ray Vannoy
In Ray’s previous two years at College of the Ozarks, he has maintained a 3.88 GPA.

Ray’s extracurricular activities included:

  • Chapter FFA Treasurer (2007-2008);
  • Chapter FFA Secretary (2008-2009);

  • Pep Band (Spring 2010-Present);

  • Visited with Residents at Point Lookout Nursing Home;
  • Babysat kids at First Baptist Church in Branson; and
  • Worked at the Boys and Girls Club of Branson.

While in high school, Ray spent his summers helping his grandfather on his farm and mowing his elderly neighbor’s lawn.  While in college, Ray does community service and volunteer work 15 hours a week.  Ray works in the power plant on the College of the Ozarks’ campus during the summer.

After college graduation, Ray plans to attend pharmacy school.
